[ARCHIVED] Bigbelly Trash and Recycling Stations Installed in Sequim

BigBelly Installation

The City of Sequim has installed two Bigbelly Automated Trash and Recycling Stations.  The stations are located on Sequim Avenue outside the public restrooms and on the Civic Center Plaza, located at 152 West Cedar Street. The compacting trash and recycling stations deploy smart, solar powered, sensor-equipped mechanisms.  They hold five to ten times the capacity over traditional bins and communicate their real-time status and notify crews when trash is ready to be collected.  The enclosed design eliminates waste overflows, visible waste, windblown litter, and critter access and provides a cleaner, greener, safer pedestrian space.

The Bigbelly Trash and Recycling Stations were the second-choice selection in the first People’s Project! Your Money, Your Power, Your Project, a participatory budgeting program held in May 2019.  Members of the community were invited to vote on projects, up to $150,000, they would most like to see included in the City of Sequim’s 2020 budget.  The first-place selection was nine water bottle refilling stations which are currently being installed in City parks. The budget allowed the City to move forward with the water stations and to also pilot the Bigbelly Trash and Recycling Stations.
