On April 27, 2022, at about 5:52 PM, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of West Heritage Loop in Sequim after Peninsula Communications received several calls that reported hearing multiple gunshots and a woman screaming.
When officers arrived, they found a 49-year-old female Sequim resident who had rushed out of her residence screaming for help and began running towards the officers. The female was covered in blood and telling officers that someone was trying to kill her.
Officers then encountered James Donald Luoma, a 66-year-old Sequim resident who was armed with a handgun and bleeding profusely from his left hand. Luoma immediately surrendered to officers without incident.
According to witness statements, Luoma approached the victim at her residence and fired multiple shots at her. The woman was not hit. A struggle ensued and the victim was able to disarm Luoma and secure the handgun from him. Luoma suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his left thumb and is currently being treated at a medical facility. Charges are pending.
Both were residents of the neighborhood and known to each other.
