[ARCHIVED] Sequim City Council Completes City Manager Annual Review

The Sequim City Council completed City Manager Steve Burkett’s annual review at a special meeting Saturday, April 12, 2014. The City Council utilized an outside facilitator to coordinate feedback from each council member into a comprehensive performance evaluation.

The City Council consistently gave Burkett very good to excellent ratings in each performance category. The Council used a rating scale of 1 – 10, with 8 representing “very good,” 9 representing “excellent,” and reserving 10 for a score of “perfect” for the evaluation. Burkett received an overall score of 9.1. The score was comprised of ratings in three areas: managerial performance, 9.1; council/manager relationship, 9.0; and employee and public relations, 9.2.

“The City Council gave Steve an overall rating of 9.1 which clearly reflects approval of his excellent performance. The Council recognizes that his abundant skills, based on knowledge and experience, have steered the City’s government to a very professional level,” said Mayor Candace Pratt.

The Council commended Burkett for the progress that he and City staff have made towards accomplishing the Council’s 2013 goals and priorities. They also expressed their appreciation for the City Manager’s proactive approach to City business, his responsiveness, knowledge and experience, conscientiousness, focus on Council goals and his personal approachability.

For the future, the Council has enlisted the City Manager’s support in providing timely information about significant meetings he has, including feedback he hears from the community; ensuring all Council members are receiving the same information; keeping the Council up to date on succession plans and Council goals; and requesting additional information from the City Attorney on the Open Public Meetings Act.

“I’m pleased and humbled by the Council’s high rating of my performance in all 12 of my key performance areas,” said City Manager Steve Burkett. “This reflects not just on my performance, but that of the entire City staff and the great teamwork we have established with the City Council and our citizens. While this year’s evaluation was great, my goal is to continually improve my performance and our citizens/customers satisfaction with city services and facilities. Sequim is a great community and deserves the very best value in its city services.”
