[ARCHIVED] The City of Sequim to Study Traffic Patterns for Improvements to West Washington Street

SEQUIM—The City of Sequim is working to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow in the Downtown district. Traffic data low resolution cameras will be mounted to the signal poles on West Washington Street at the intersections of Sequim, 3rd, 5th, and 7th Avenues to collect traffic data between May 5 and May 9, 2016.

The cameras will film overhead shots of the intersections. Video analytics software automatically counts the vehicle movements. No personal information can be captured through this method.

The traffic data collected will include vehicle and pedestrian counts, type and turning movement volumes, and vehicle and pedestrian operational issues. The data will be analyzed and used as a basis for making traffic signal improvements at these key intersections. Improvements may include updated timing plans, left and right turn operations, and better coordination between the signals. The Public Works Department chose to conduct the study during the Sequim Irrigation Festival in order to capture a large quantity of data in a short period of time.

Once the data is collected and analyzed, the City will hold a public outreach meeting to solicit public input before any solutions or recommendations are finalized.

The City of Sequim is utilizing transportation impact fees to conduct the study.

Please contact the City of Sequim Public Works Department at (360) 683-4908 with questions.
